Now I may state, after I have taken too much time setting the table, as to why I am writing in serve support of the amazing artwork from a man with the genuine sole of an artist, a true gentleman and an unofficial ambassador for Greece, Mr. Vasilios Sofianidis. I met Vassilios in New York City in October of 2016 at the EQUUS Film Festival. The EQUUS Film Festival; is dedicated to horses and the people who love them. Held in New York City, EQUUS showcases equine art, literature, shorts, documentaries, and I am taking this festival online at www.filmfestivalflix.com for this online distribution platform this spring.
I first noticed the art work display at the festival but was amazed to see a poster of Thessaloniki, remembering all of those stories I would listen to of a faraway beautiful place in Greece as well as Kavala (where my grandma was born and moved to Salonika). I immediately sought out the artist whose work was so awe inspiring and the director of the festival Ms. Lisa Diersen immediately told me I must meet the outstanding creator and made the introduction. Mr. Sofianidis has been wonderful about staying in touch and inviting me so many times to visit. In fact he was generous to take the trip to the Thessaloniki Film Festival and meet with my director, Mr Mendez, when LIFE was presented there.
I have had the wonderful experience of meeting many remarkable, talented, accomplished, and powerful people in my career. It is my sense that Mr. Vassilios Sofianidis, albeit humble in his demeanor, is an accomplished and stunning artist. His work captures the essence of the horse. His attention to detail and talent to execute the smallest details; the eyes, the mane and tail, the physical stature, strength and kindness of these grand creatures fills the heart and mind of those of us who so love the horse. America was developed on the back of the horse from the original Native Americans to the settlers from all over theworld. Their lives were dependent upon their horses. It is the same for many peoples around the world. Greece has such a mythological and true history and beautiful horse culture.
Mr. Sofianidis represents the horse on his canvas with his incredible line drawing and paint artistry. Those who received it upon its perception as it was presented at the festival embraced his work in New York City embraced the artist, Vassilios Sofianidis, and look forward to his return. He is truly an ambassador for his Country, Greece, as well as the spirit of the horse. I hope to someday visit with him to see your beautiful country and enjoy the Greek life. Vassilios Sofianidis is a national treasure, as an artist and as a wonderful Greek human being. Celebrate his artwork and his spirit as it cherishes Greece; classical and modern, then and now.
Thank you for allowing me your time to share my thoughts about this exceptional human being and his wondrous art.
